Blackbutt Decking

If you’re getting ready to add a brand new deck onto the exterior of your house, you certainly aren’t without your lack of options. Out of all the varieties of timber decking that you can pick from depending on your needs, there are more than a few compelling reasons why Blackbutt decking may be the species for you in more ways than one.

What is Blackbutt Decking?

Also commonly referred to as coastal Blackbutt, pink Blackbutt or the much more official “eucalyptus pilularis,” Blackbutt is a specific type of large Australian hardwood which grows along the coast of Queensland and New South Wales and is known for its use in exterior applications. Because of its attractiveness and overall durability, it’s perfect for most structural needs that you may have. Due to its longevity, it is also often used to produce plywood.

Blackbutt Decking: What You Need to Know

One of the most important things to understand about Blackbutt decking is that it’s incredibly durable and long lasting, but not necessarily without a certain degree of intervention on the homeowner or builder’s behalf. There is a slight chance that you may run into surface cracking if the Blackbutt is not oiled or stained beforehand, which itself can potentially cause a problem later on down the road if you try to paint your deck a new colour.

Blackbutt has a consistent colour, ranging from a honey colour to a pale brown with a pink tinge. It also possesses a straight grain with an even texture. Blackbutt timber is very hard with a Janka rating of 9.1 and a durability rating of Class 1, making it resistant to insects and decay.

If you DO choose to go ahead with Blackbutt for your decking project, the two primary benefits that you will unlock come by way of strength and durability. Even making the simple decision to use Blackbutt all but guarantees that your deck will dutifully serve you for years to come, particularly in terms of standing up to anything Mother Nature can throw at it. Because of these facts, Blackbutt was actually one of only seven species of hardwood timber that were approved by the Building Commission in Victoria for use in areas where bushfires are common.
